Not just the creation of an image, but the process of making marks, observing what happens with the paint, and experimenting with opposing elements on the canvas. I also love horses. I rode as a child and teenager and still ride today on my three horses, Spirit, Concho and Rio. This love for horses has significantly influenced my art, even when creating paintings that — at least nominally — are not about horses. Something about the image of these graceful animals and the way they move informs the way I visualize shapes and marks on a canvas. My love for creating art led me to study art education and design at Florida State University and later to pursue and receive a Master’s degree in fine art from Georgia State University. In addition to creating my own art, I taught art to adults as an adjunct instructor at The Atlanta College of Art and in my own studio for 22 years. I also facilitated a critique class in which artists brought in their paintings for discussion, suggestions for improvement and acknowledgement of success. This helped deepen my understanding of the painting process and constantly challenged me to analyze what makes a painting “work.” Today, my studio is at my home in the country, west of St. Louis, MO, where my three horses roam the property.
